My Favorites
Throughout the semester we have read many different stories and poems by many different authors. Out of all of them I think Poe, Dickinson, and Hawthorne. I really enjoyed their style of writing, and the stories and poems they wrote. I favorite piece of work by each author is as follows. With Poe it would without a doubt be "The Raven." I love the dark gothic style of this poem. I loved it the first time I read it, and I still love it today. With Hawthorne I would say my favorite would be "Rappaccini's Daughter." With this story I really enjoyed the way Hawthorne painted a picture with his words. The way he describes the garden, and how the flowers and Beatrice were connected. Overall I just thought it was a well written story with a good plot. With Dickinson I would have to say my favorite piece of work was "Becaus I could not stop for Death." I liked everything about this poem. The way she used the horses and carriage as an extended metaphor was brilliant. It worked really well with the message she was trying to convey. Or at least I thought it did. I would recommend all of these, and others to anyone that enjoys reading good stories and poetry. They are all wonderful in my opinion.

Emily Dickinson
I just finished up reading some of Emily Dickinson's poems. At firtst I must say I wasn't very impressed. Then I read a few more and realized this women was very ahead of her time. I found that most of her poems were kind of hard to understand. The way she writes and the words she uses makes the reader really have to think about what she is trying to say. I had to read some of them multiple times before I fully grasped the message she was trying to get across. Which normaly I don't enjoy having to do, but I found that I wanted to do it with her poems. I wanted to know exactly what she wanted the reader to understand. In the end I'm glad that I read her work. It turned out to be very good.

Young Goodman Brown
Recently I read a story by Nathaniel Hawthorne called Young Goodman Brown. This is a terrific story of love, depression, and betrayal. I really enjoyed the way he used the "dark Forest" as a metaphor for these very feelings. He even includes a demon with a staff that resembled a black snake. Which is one of the oldest forms that people associate with evil. He even throws in a little human sacrifice to drive the point home. In this story he includes very important and powerful people taking part in these feelings of depression and guilt. He also writes about them attending the sacrifice. This makes it very easy for the reader to relate to this story and it's message. Which is no matter who you are, you are always susceptible to depression and evil. I really enjoyed this story.

I recently read a story by Nathaniel Hawthorne called Rappaccini's Daughter. I really enjoyed this story a lot. It's a very interesting and well written story. I normally don't get to into stories of love and loss, but this one was different. I really liked the way Hawthorne connects Beatrice with the garden and it's flowers. He even refers to one of them as her sister in the story. While reading this story I found myself wanting more. I couldn't put the story down. This is a great story and I would suggest that everyone read it once.

The Scarlet Letter

I just finished reading the Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne. At first I really didn't see myself liking this story, but as I read on I found myself enjoying it. I enjoyed reading about Hester and her perseverance. She is scorned and embarrassed by the town folk, and even her child's father. Yet she didn't let any of that get her down. She didn't let the scarlet letter she wore define her. She helped the poor and the sick in any way she could. Even when they threatened to take her daughter Pearl away, she fought to keep her. Nothing anyone did or said dictated how she lived her life. She accepted her fate and eventually came to own it. Hester even dressed her daughter Pearl in beautiful red dresses that matched the scarlet A she had to bare. She was a very strong woman, and nobody could change her.

Sleepy Hollow

I just got done reading a story called The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. One of my favorite stories ever. I have read this story many times and never get tired of it. It's a tale of love, mischief, and excitement. It keeps you interested, and locked in on the story. It has clever wit, action, mystery, and even a little comedy. It is a story that has been made into movies, inspired Halloween costumes, and still scares little kids to this very day. I thought it was even better that I got to read it again so close to Halloween. When all kinds of ghost and goblins roam the night. It's the perfect time to read this story. After all, who doesn't love a good ghost story when it's this time of year. And Washington Irving has one of the best!

Walden

I was reading a story called Walden by Henry David Thoreau. I must say I found it about as interesting as watching paint dry. It was basically an account of his life while living in a house by a pond, and a very uninteresting one at that. I'm not saying it wasn't written well or anything like that. I'm just saying I would rather watch golf all day than read that story again. At least in golf there is a chance of something exciting happening. After the first 5 or 10 pages I had to literally force myself to turn to the next page and keep reading. He talked about sitting and watching birds fly in circles and spending his day more like the animals do. Sounds like this guy needed a hobby, and needed one badly. By far the most boring and uninteresting story I've read so far for this class. Would not recommend it to anyone.
